Creating Fallow

Creating Fallow

Creating Fallow is a two year project which explores work, seasonality, and the concept of Sabbath through art, science and discussion. The need to rest is a personal struggle for many and a structural issue in society. And yet, rest is essential to our way of life as human beings.

Rest and sabbath are social justice issues which illuminate society’s value of people’s labour and people themselves. Creating Fallow is inspired by the concept of Sabbath as a form of resistance.

As SAW approaches 15 years of developing exhibitions, regular creative groups, events and publications, we want to take time to consider how rest, Sabbath, rhythm and seasonality can shape our future and become embedded in our lives. Six years on from the Covid pandemic, we are also struck by the need to accept human fragility and limitations – we are not machines, we are created to rest regularly. An integral part of the Christian faith is the knowledge that humans aren’t designed to work all the time and that our value does not come from what or how much we do. This is expressed in the Sabbath, the practice of resting every seven days. How could rest be a form of resistance and enable everyone to rest?

Creating Fallow presents a relevant and inspiring programme that is an antidote and challenge to rushing, pressured culture. The programme will be intentionally slow burning,  featuring a series of creative and experimental workshops, exhibitions, writing and reflective activities.   You can check out these events (past, present and future) below:
